Since the beginning of the Russian offensive war in Ukraine, it has been omnipresent (again): the fear of a nuclear attack. Researchers have now for the first time investigated how this would affect people in a building and where it would then be safest.
For their study “Nuclear Explosion Impact on Humans Indoors,” published Tuesday in the journal “Physics of Fluids,” researchers at the University of Nicosia in Cyprus used computer models to examine the effects of a nearby nuclear bomb explosion on humans in a reinforced concrete building with typical rooms, windows, doors and aisles. The results show that just being in a stable building is not enough to prevent the risk of injury or death. On the contrary, people should choose their position with care.
