According to the Russian Telegram channel “VChK-OGPU”, which has an impressive 798,000 subscribers, former Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin was identified as one of the dead.
A Wagner commander recognized him in the morgue because of a missing finger. According to the British newspaper Daily Mail, Prigozhin was mutilated decades ago while staying in a prison camp.
Prigozhin’s deputy Dmitri Utkin was also recognized. This was possible due to the man’s size and tattoos – including SS symbols.
A source told the Telegram channel that the bodies were littered with rectangular shrapnel known from the S-300 anti-aircraft missile complexes.
So far it is unclear what led to the explosion in the plane. Experts believe that a bomb on board, targeted sabotage or a shootout brought the machine to the ground. However, the US Secret Service considers the first two variants more likely.
The Kremlin denies the murder
The Kremlin denies ordering Prigozhin’s assassination. “This is an absolute lie,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. The case of the plane crash should be dealt with “on the basis of facts”.
Despite earlier disputes, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to the family of his disgraced former ally. “He was a man with a difficult fate, he made some serious mistakes in his life,” he explained. He had known Prigozhin since the 1990s and appreciated him as a “talented businessman”.
