Former European Parliament Vice-President Eva Kaili, who was arrested on corruption charges, remains in prison. The competent court decided that on Thursday, the public prosecutor announced. Accordingly, Kaili now has 24 hours to take action against the decision.
Kaili’s lawyer had previously confirmed that his client was innocent.
Allegations: money laundering, corruption, involvement in a criminal organization
Justice suspects Kaili and other suspects of involvement in a criminal organization, money laundering and corruption. It concerns alleged influence on political decisions of the EU parliament by Qatar and Morocco. Researchers discovered this in December.
“It’s All Torture”
However, Kaili’s lawyer blamed the Belgian authorities for their provisional detention conditions. “The conditions in the police cell in Brussels are reminiscent of the Middle Ages,” Michalis Dimitrakopoulos told international media on Thursday afternoon. “It’s all torture.” Dimitrakopoulos claimed that Kaili was in solitary confinement and sleep deprived.
All in all, she stayed at the police station from January 11 to 12 and is now detained in Haren prison, Dimitrakopoulos confirmed to the German news agency when asked. According to a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Justice, detainees in the recently opened prison are in their own cells with showers.
