British police have announced an investigation following the release of a video showing British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak unbuckled in a moving car. The case is under investigation, police said Thursday evening. Sunak had previously published a video on the internet promoting his own politics from the back seat of a moving car – without wearing a seatbelt.
A Lancashire police spokesman, where the prime minister was absent during the recording, said the agency was “aware of the matter” and was investigating. Driving without a seatbelt in the UK can be fined up to £500 (€571).
Sunak spokesperson admits “mistakes”.
A spokesman for the prime minister said Sunak apologized for his “mistake”. “The prime minister believes that everyone should wear a seat belt,” said the spokesman. Sunak only unfastened the strap “for a brief moment” to record the video. This was a “misjudgment”.
Sunak’s air travel caused criticism
Sunak’s travel behavior caused quite a stir after the prime minister used a private jet several times in recent days for short-haul flights of 30 to 40 minutes. The use of the aircraft creates “a high cost to the environment and to the taxpayer,” deputy leader of the opposition Labor Party, Angela Rayner, criticized. However, a government spokesman stressed that Sunak chooses his mode of transport “based on how best to use his time to travel across the UK”.
