Major fire in slum – Seoul: about 500 people rescued from fire

About 500 people have been brought to safety after a fire broke out in a settlement in the South Korean capital of Seoul on Friday morning. Authorities said the fire broke out early in the morning in Guryong village, south of Seoul.

The settlement in Gangnam district is considered one of the last slums in South Korea’s capital, with more than 600 households living here in a very small space. According to the fire service, 40 houses have been destroyed so far. About 140 firefighters are on hand to contain the fire. It is not yet clear whether there are any injuries or deaths.

A government spokeswoman said South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was doing everything possible to contain damage and mobilize all available firefighters.
