Rising food prices are making us appreciate the food supply more again. But to really stop this wasteful madness, the WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature) is calling for laws.
We are great at food rescue! In times of record inflation, more and more Austrians are saving food from the trash. Globally, more than a third of all food produced ends up as waste somewhere. In households alone, a billion euros worth of edible food is thrown away every year. However, awareness has long reached the population.
75 percent of the 500 participants in a Too Good To Go survey answered the question whether they knew that the majority of food waste occurs in private households.
Stop the beauty craze for fruits and vegetables
Additionally, 42 percent said they value food more because of the price increase. When it comes to keeping food out of the trash, the freezer is experiencing a new renaissance. Meanwhile, ahead of Friday’s World Food Waste Day, WWF is calling for new laws and an end to the “beauty craze” for fruit and vegetables. Excessive trading standards ensure, among other things, that perfectly edible products from trees and fields cannot be sold.
As a result, 15 percent of the food produced worldwide is lost to agriculture. A next step would be to extend the reporting obligation for companies in the food sector to catering and food production. “Only if we know where, why and how much food is lost can we effectively combat unnecessary waste,” explains Dominik Heizmann of the environmental protection organization.
