Instead of sailing to dream destinations, the cruise ship Ocean Majesty should serve as a home for asylum seekers in Germany in the future. The vehicle, which is considered one of the longest-serving dream ships, was still on the road with tourists until recently – now it lies off Hamburg and is waiting to be used for its new purpose.
Built in 1966, the ship was initially designed as a ferry and was eventually converted into a cruise ship in 1989. Up to 500 passengers could explore beautiful destinations such as the North Cape or the Caribbean on the 135-meter long vehicle. But these glorious times are apparently over: because the ship, which has seven passenger decks, a swimming pool, lido bar, show lounge, cinema, boutique, library, hair salon, launderette, hospital, gym and sauna, is now becoming a floating refugee house in Amsterdam.
Almost all crew members were discharged during a cruise
Ocean Majesty returned Monday from a three-week trip to Greenland. The ship’s crew was notified of their termination during the voyage. Almost all contracts of the approximately 220 crew members of the charterer “Hansa Touristik” have been terminated, the “Bild” reports. Apparently the use as a refugee house generates more income than traveling with tourists, the German newspaper speculates.
The fact that the ship is used as a hotel is not new: from 2015, the Ocean Majesty served as a shelter for workers during the expansion of the Suez Canal.
