No tsunami – magnitude 7.0 earthquake off New Zealand coast

Date:

A strong earthquake occurred on Thursday afternoon (local time) in the Kermadec Islands, which belong to New Zealand. The US Earthquake Observatory gave the magnitude as 7.0. The earthquake occurred at a depth of more than 22 kilometers in the sea. An initially feared tsunami failed to materialise.

The chain of islands, which has been part of New Zealand since 1887, is located about 1,000 kilometers northeast of the Pacific state. The Kermadec Islands are uninhabited.

A month ago, New Zealand was hit by an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale. The center was near the capital Wellington at a depth of about 48 kilometers in the sea, but the tremors were felt in large parts of the country. However, major damage failed to materialize and an initially feared tsunami did not materialize.
