“Stone Age Massacre” becomes a crime mystery in Lower Austria

Date:

What is probably the oldest criminal case in Lower Austria is currently being solved by universities, citizens of the Weinviertel and schoolchildren. The mystery of a brutal attack, which probably wiped out an entire Stone Age settlement, must now finally be solved.

The historical setting: “little kingdom” Asparn on the Zaya – Schletz 7000 years ago. It is estimated that up to 1000 people lived there, which would correspond in size to (but not yet existing) Vienna. A large-scale archaeological project should clarify what happened to the center of the region north of the Danube.

who was the killer
Grave finds prove that this so-called central settlement was brutally plundered and exterminated. More than 100 skeletons have been found so far, but many more residents are said to have been brutally murdered. “We want to clarify that now,” says project manager Jakob Maurer.

The fact that the bodies were not buried, but simply left lying, argues for a robbery. “The large number of injured and the absence of young women is also striking – they have certainly been kidnapped,” the Danube University expert speculates.

In any case, it must have been a strong force, because the settlement complex included a triple protective moat wall with only a few entrances. And the attackers would come from afar. Possible cause: a migratory movement – caused by climate change, when food sources elsewhere became scarce due to the cold.

It is now important for the scientists to correctly classify the human remains in order to use modern research methods to distinguish the skeletal parts of the local population from those of the attackers.

Region participates in the “exploration”
This requires both surface finds such as potsherds and soil samples. The latter take over the 3A and 3B of the local school center Asparn an der Zaya: they are trained by professionals in the use of the special equipment in their hometown.

“In any case, it is an interesting experience for the students to participate in such a project. But it also has the advantage that you learn how serious climate change and its consequences can be”, director Hannes Keintzel draws parallels with today.
