It is not the first time that the EU Commission wants to maintain the up to 25 meter long gigaliner across the board, even if not all roads are made for the giants. Austria has always opposed all these plans.
Finally, in 2014, the EU Parliament put the brakes on mega trucks and prevented European approval. But now a new attack threatens. Suggestions are currently being collected for a package to make transport greener. And one of the ideas refers to the Gigaliner – the argument is based on supposedly lower emissions of harmful substances.
Package will be presented in the second quarter
One big truck is more environmentally friendly than three small ones, according to monster truck proponents, based mainly in Scandinavia, where the mighty vans have long been in use. The entire package will be presented in the second quarter of this year.
Austria is still against it
Austria is already preparing for a new battle against the Gigaliners. According to diplomatic circles, green freight traffic on the road cannot be the goal, but the heavy vehicles must be put on the track. The Ministry of Transport emphasizes that it will continue to speak out strongly against the giant vehicles, both in the Transport Council and in exchanges with Members of the European Parliament.
According to Minister Gewessler, a gigaliner does not contribute to CO₂ reduction. Also: “The Austrian road network is not designed for the greater weight load, it would require high investments, especially in bridges.”
