Request submitted – Leftists want to exclude Wagenknecht from the party

Date:

More than fifty members of the German Left want to expel Bundestag member Sahra Wagenknecht from the party. They filed a corresponding application with the state arbitration commission on Monday. The politicians justified this move by saying that Wagenknecht had not abandoned plans to create a new party.

She also did not respond to the party leadership’s request to give back her mandate. “We therefore underline the decision of the party board of June 10, 2023 that the future of the left is a future without Sahra Wagenknecht. And we are now following the formal route to do this,” said two signatories. According to the party’s own statement, the application is intended to “protect us from further harm.”

As reported, the left failed to reach the five percent threshold in the state elections in Hesse and Bavaria on Sunday. Wagenknecht has a falling out with the leadership of the left and is considering setting up his own party (see video above). She accuses the presidents of the association, Martin Schirdewan and Janine Wissler, of not representing the interests of people with little money.

New club founded
“The scenario that clubs are now founded in peace and Sahra Wagenknecht builds a new party with the resources of the left is no longer acceptable to us,” said Sofia Leonidakis, leader of the left group in the Bremen parliament. She was referring to the association “BSW – for Reason and Justice”, which was registered at the end of September.

The former left-wing state chairman of Saarland, Jochen Flackus, is said to be behind this. He in turn is an old confidante of Wagenknecht’s husband Oskar Lafontaine. Leonidakis and other party members see the association as a precursor to founding a party.
