North Korean leader Kim Jong-un wants to warn opponents of the isolated and dictatorial state with the latest test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
The launch was “a clear signal to the enemy forces who have stoked their reckless military confrontation hysteria” against the North, state news agency KCNA quoted Kim as saying on Tuesday.
The exercise demonstrated “the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) willingness to take the strongest countermeasures and its overwhelming strength.”
Missile with range to the US
On Monday, North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile with a range as far as the US. Kim watched the launch of the Hwasong-18 from a location east of the capital Pyongyang, state media reported.
The rocket reached an altitude of 6,518 kilometers and flew 1,002 kilometers before falling into the sea at its intended location. Kim also presented “some important new tasks to accelerate the development of the DPRK’s strategic nuclear forces,” he said, without giving further details.
The UN Security Council intervenes
The government in Pyongyang accused the US of staging a “foretaste of nuclear war”. She was referring to the arrival of the nuclear-powered submarine “USS Missouri” in South Korea. The United States is South Korea’s most important military ally.
The shooting was condemned by South Korea, Japan and the United States as a blatant violation of UN Security Council resolutions. At the request of the US and other countries, the UN Security Council will discuss the missile launch on Tuesday. It has long been suspected that North Korea could also be preparing a new nuclear test.
