Scholz promises that Paris and Berlin will “give all support to Ukraine as long as it is needed”

Date:

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged today that Paris and Berlin will “continue to give all support to Ukraine for as long as it takes, together as Europeans, to defend our European peace project,” in a speech at the university’s Grand Amphitheatre. of the Sorbonne in Paris coinciding with the Franco-German summit commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Elysee Treaty of cooperation between the two countries.

French President Emmanuel Macron, for his part, reiterated “the unwavering support” of France and Germany for Ukraine in the same place. “After February 24 (the date of the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year), our union has not been divided and has not shirked its responsibilities,” said the French head of state.

These statements come after Germany refused to allow Leopard tanks to be sent to Kiev to better defend the Ukrainians against a possible new Russian offensive, a decision that has drawn criticism from several European allied countries.

The celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty, signed on 22 January 1963 by Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and President Charles de Gaulle and definitively sealing the reconciliation of France and Germany after World War II, also aims to take advantage of trying to turn the page on the tensions of recent months due to the lack of chemistry between the leaders of the two countries and the fundamental differences between Paris and Berlin on defense and energy policy.

The Franco-German driving force, which has been key in European construction so far, must remain so in the future, the two presidents promised. “Germany and France, as they have paved the way for reconciliation, must become pioneers together for the reconstitution of our Europe,” Macron added in his speech.
