More than seven months after the victory of the radical right-wing populist Geert Wilders in the Dutch House of Representatives elections, the most extreme government in the country’s history has been sworn in.
Former intelligence chief Dick Schoof, who wants to implement the ‘toughest’ asylum policy ever with his right-wing conservative cabinet, was sworn in by King Willem-Alexander on Tuesday as successor to former Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
During a ceremony in the residential palace Huis ten Bosch near The Hague, all ministers and state secretaries took the oath in the presence of the monarch (“so help me God Almighty”) or a corresponding worldly vow.
Geert Wilders forms the coalition, but has no office
The four-party coalition is largely controlled by Wilders, who is not a member of the cabinet himself. The new alliance partners of the Party for Freedom (PVV), led by Wilders, made his resignation a condition for their participation in the government.
