No avalanche – Slovenian killed during ski trip in Obertauern

Date:

42 mountain rescuers went on Sunday morning to search for a missing 54-year-old winter sportsman from Slovenia. In the afternoon, the man was found dead. It is unlikely that this was an avalanche accident.

The 54-year-old ski tourer from Slovenia had already left for a ski tour in the Tauern on Saturday afternoon. The athlete’s car was found by emergency services in the parking lot of the Grünwaldkopfbahn in Obertauern. Friends had previously reported him missing to the police.

“We were told he was experienced and knew the area and had been on a ski tour in open terrain. But we didn’t know where he was going,” said Christian Binggl, head of operations and dog handler for the mountain rescue service in Obertauern.

42 mountain rescuers from Obertauern, Mauterndorf, Radstadt, Alpine police and members of the mountain rescue dog team searched the area of Gamsspitzl, Zehnerkar, Gamsleiten, Seekarspitz and Seekareck. The conditions were challenging due to a lot of fresh snow and poor visibility.

The athlete was eventually found in the Seekareck area, 1,987 meters above sea level, thanks to the signal from his avalanche rescue device. Excavation had to be carried out from a depth of two meters. A doctor present could only declare death.

There are no indications of an avalanche; the well-equipped alpinist probably fell on a cornice while climbing. The Alpine police are investigating the exact cause of death.
