The doctors in Vienna are fed up with patients who don’t show up for appointments. Even the Medical Association’s push for cancellation fees doesn’t go far enough for them. Carefree patients will soon have to pay. We asked those in charge.
The mere word “cancellation fee” for patients who let appointments run without excuse irritates Erik Randall Huber. “We are not travel agencies,” says the chairman of the general practitioners in Vienna irritably: making a doctor wait for free in the practice has nothing to do with a cancellation, but with damage suffered by the doctors – and other patients. The problem visibly burns under the fingernails of the doctors. Some ordinations report up to 15 percent failure rates. According to Huber, patients are particularly undisciplined during follow-up appointments – often showing up with problems because they missed exactly those appointments.
