Nightly tragedy in wintry road conditions in Mattighofen in Upper Austria: the man just managed to get out of the car that sank upside down, the woman and a dog were left in the car and could only be rescued dead.
The serious accident happened on Sunday night at 01:15 in Rosengasse in Mattighofen. A couple was present with their Porsche Cayenne. In winter road conditions – temperatures were below zero and snow was falling. While driving over a bridge, the SUV suddenly skidded. The car left the road on a right-hand bend, fell over an embankment and ended up upside down in the Kühbach with the tires up.
Car door is stuck in a layer of mud
While the driver (60) was apparently able to get out of the car in time at the last minute, his wife (54) and her dog were not allowed to do so. Even if the chain of rescue was set in motion immediately, this circumstance meant the death penalty for both.
A witness (55) jumped into the one and a half meter deep stream and tried in vain to open the car door, which was stuck in a deep layer of mud. A police patrol that arrived immediately afterwards also took part in the rescue efforts.
Motionless in the passenger seat
The cop couldn’t even break a window with an iron bar. Only the fire brigade managed to open the door. “We turned the car around and pulled it out of the stream,” confirms FF section commander Josef Maderegger (54). He and his comrades opened the door. However, an emergency doctor present was unable to revive the woman, who had sunk motionless in the passenger seat. Unfortunately, there was no rescue for the lap dog either.
Accidents keep happening here
The man was taken to Braunau hospital by the Red Cross. According to the police, the Porsche was apparently not equipped with winter tires but with all-season tires, some profiles of which may no longer be suitable for winter use. The related investigations were not yet completed on Sunday evening. In the vicinity of the accident site accidents have happened again and again in the past.
