A huge blow was dealt to illegal collectors of vintage vehicles as part of “Operation Sharp”. A total of 117 illegally stored scrap vehicles and other hazardous waste were seized over six days at three locations in the municipality of Sollenau.
There has been dissatisfaction in Sollenau and the surrounding area for some time about the often illegal activities of numerous dealers in old vehicles. State Vice President Stephan Pernkopf about the successful campaign: “Tons of hazardous waste and scrap metal were dug up by the environmental police, seized and disposed of properly. Thank you to our experts and the executive branch, who were able to prevent major environmental damage and keep our homeland clean!”
Scrap vehicles, contaminated car parts
The campaign was supported by the state’s environmental and facilities law department, as well as by experts, the district administration of Wiener Neustadt and the police services from Sollenau. Within two weeks, a total of 25 people were employed, who, in addition to the illegal demolition vehicles, also dug up contaminated vehicle parts, rims, engines, gearboxes and other scrap metal and bulky waste, totaling more than 150 tons. According to Pernkopf, professional container vehicles with loading cranes and tow trucks were used.
Readers of ‘Krone’ know: the state of Lower Austria has been carrying out stricter controls on illegal ‘scrap dealers’ and car dismantling companies for some time now. “We also make these actions public so that there is a clear warning: we have no place for such illegal activities,” says Pernkopf. According to the responsible state council, further actions of this kind are in preparation.
