“Gene babies” lead completely normal lives

Date:

The Chinese researcher He Jiankui has a vision: everyone should be free of hereditary diseases. The genetic researcher has been in prison for three years for this vision. Because the controversial scientist had genetically modified several embryos. Twins Lulu and Nana, born in 2018, have become famous. According to Hes, the two – and also a third child he changed – lead completely normal lives about four years after their birth.

According to the researcher, he had manipulated the genome of the unborn child with the Crispr/Cas9 gene scissors in such a way that the children were protected against infection with HIV. His actions caused outrage in trade and public circles. The Chinese disappeared from the public eye after his experiments became known. Two of his colleagues were also sentenced to prison terms and fines in court.

Researcher cares for ‘gene children’ as a ‘father’
Now he has given an interview to the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post. When asked if he was concerned about the future of his children, the researcher replied that he had the same expectations and concerns as any father about the future of his children.

He and his team promised the parents that they would continue to monitor the children’s health. Attempts have also been made to obtain additional private insurance. But none of the insurance companies wanted to participate. Now the intention is to create a charitable foundation to raise money.

He’s already running a new lab
He is reportedly already running a new laboratory in Beijing, where he is researching affordable therapies for rare genetic diseases. Other experts continue to doubt whether the gene experiments have had the desired success.
