“Krone” talks – tanks for Ukraine: “Hesitation costs lives”

Date:

Olga Stefanishyna, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, urges the “Krone” talk to speed up tank deliveries and explains why sanctions against Russia do not go far enough.

“Any hesitation costs Ukrainian lives,” Olga Stefanishyna, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, said in an interview with “Krone”. The government in Kiev still has little understanding for the refusal of the Western Allies, especially Germany, to supply main battle tanks. “The dialogue continues,” said Stefanischyna, but it should be clear to everyone “that this is a decisive moment in the war.”

Majority of attacks against civilians
Especially for Ukraine. According to the minister, a large part of the Russian attacks are aimed at the civilian population. 50 percent of Ukraine’s electricity systems are damaged. At least half of the country has bottlenecks in the electricity and water supply, the minister reports on the phone with the “Krone”. “We don’t expect any easing until spring.”

The Ukrainian army is also out of ammunition, according to experts. “Under these circumstances it is difficult to contemplate a decisive counter-offensive.”

Still, Stefanishyna assumes that Ukraine will win the war: “Russia has not achieved any of its goals. It is clear that Ukraine is winning this war. Ukraine’s victory is inevitable.” And according to Stefanishyna, it must be ensured that “there is no hunger, no appetite for any kind of military aggression in Europe or anywhere else. The group of states that could follow the Russian example is growing.”

That is why she is also in favor of stricter EU sanctions: “Only 11 of the 330 Russian banks are subject to sanctions. Further steps must be taken to decouple more Russian banks from the Western financial system.” Russia must lose its place as one of the main energy exporters, trade relations must be broken. Restricting Russia’s access to maritime transport would further undermine its export-oriented economy.

Ukraine is determined to join the EU soon
Stefanishyna, who is also Minister of European Integration, is in favor of Ukraine joining the EU and NATO shortly after the end of the war. “Given that in times of war, under the constant threat of missiles, the Ukrainian parliament has achieved dozens and dozens of EU accession goals, that should be enough proof of how strong our determination is.” rose.
