Iran threatens the European Union and Britain with countermeasures after imposing new sanctions. The Islamic Republic will soon release a list of new sanctions “against human rights abusers” by the EU and Britain, a foreign ministry spokesman in Tehran said on Tuesday.
On Monday, the EU imposed sanctions on more than 30 Iranian state officials and organizations for cracking down on recent protests and other human rights abuses. The powerful Revolutionary Guards are also affected. Great Britain and the US have also announced new sanctions.
Months of massive violence
Demonstrations against the country’s leadership have been taking place regularly in Iran since September. The authorities intervened with enormous violence. Several people were killed. Death sentences were also carried out. Iran’s actions against the protesters further worsened the West’s already tense relationship with leaders in Tehran over the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.
