The ‘secret constitution’ of Cosa Nostra comes to light

Date:

Police confirm through the conversations of a detainee for extortion the existence of a “written statute” with the rules left by the “constituent fathers” of the Sicilian mafia

The members of Cosa Nostra, the Sicilian mafia, have a kind of ‘secret constitution’ whose principles must be respected by all members of the organisation. The Carabinieri came to this conclusion during an operation that led to the arrest on Tuesday of seven people alleged to belong to the criminal clan of Rocca Mezzomnrreale, rooted in the outskirts of Palermo. Gioacchino Badagliacca, one of the seven suspects of extortion and being part of this mafia association, speaks in one of the wiretaps carried out by the security forces about the existence of a “written statute” that the “founding fathers” allegedly left behind, which details the iron rules that must be respected within the Cosa Nostra.

This testimony, obtained through a hidden microphone, confirms the suspicions of the researchers, who have speculated for decades about the existence of a text with these characteristics. “Badagliacca made an explosive revelation for the investigation: he referred to the existence of a written document, a true and authentic statute of the organization, which would have stated the principles and cardinal rules of Cosa Nostra. The organization,” says the organization Lirio Conti, the preliminary investigating judge of Palermo in charge of the operation. Said rules “would have remained unchanged over the years and, even today, remain essential and vital to the survival of the criminal structure.”

The researchers lend credence to Badagliacca’s words as he is a member of a historic Cosa Nostra family, at the time connected to the ‘Corleonesi’ clan of Salvatore ‘Totò’ Riina and Bernardo Provenzano, who led this organization until its bloodiest time. It was precisely the Badagliacca who organized Provenzano’s trip to France when he went into hiding to receive medical treatment. They are also said to have maintained a relationship with another historic capo like Matteo Messina Denaro, arrested last week at a cancer clinic in Palermo after nearly 30 years of searching and capturing. Messina Denaro, a reference figure from Cosa Nostra in the western province of Trapani, was the last of the godfathers to take part in the major mafia raids of the early 1990s who had not yet been arrested.

The operation that made this important capture possible is still open and has already made it possible to find three shelters that the capo would have used in the town of Campobello di Mazara, located in Trápani, western Sicily. In addition to expensive perfumes, luxury furniture, condoms, Viagra pills and several posters with images of gangsters from the movie world, investigators have found several women’s clothing, so they are now looking for their possible sentimental partner. She wouldn’t be the only important woman in the life of Messina Denaro, whose sister, Maria Filippa, helped her through her first phase of hiding until her arrest in 1997. She was the first woman to be sentenced to 41 bis, the harsh prison regime known as overweight in Italy for the mafia bosses.
