After the approval of tank deliveries by other partner countries, the next delicate decision is apparently waiting in Berlin. According to reports, a European country wants to make cluster munitions available to Ukraine – and ask Germany for a supply license because it is involved in the production. Cluster munitions are banned internationally.
An official representative of a European country announced this in Washington on Wednesday. The representative wished to remain anonymous and did not name his country. Cluster munitions shoot dozens of smaller explosives into the air that spread over an area of hundreds of square meters, killing or injuring people indiscriminately. Russia is blamed for its offensive war in the Ukraine too use cluster munitions.
The European representative argued, however, that cluster munitions had meanwhile been technically further developed “and the collateral damage was no longer as great” as in the 1940s and 1950s, for example. Neither Russia nor Ukraine are among the 110 or so signatories to an international treaty banning the use, transportation, production and stockpiling of cluster bombs.
Scholz expects a long war in Ukraine
Despite deliveries of main battle tanks, which will now take place in the coming months, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz still expects a long war in Ukraine. One must assume that “unfortunately the war will not end soon,” Scholz said on ZDF on Wednesday evening. The main battle tanks now promised are very effective and would be “very useful” in defense against Russia.
