A 41-year-old hunter is suspected of illegally killing a fallow deer in Gleisdorf (Weiz district) in Styria in early November 2022. He is reported on suspicion of animal cruelty.
At the end of October / beginning of November 2022, a fallow deer came out of a game gate. A 41-year-old hunter saw the animal and killed it. According to the provisions of the Hunting Act, fallow deer can generally be hunted from the beginning of August to the end of December. However, these provisions only apply to wild game and not to game kept solely for breeding and meat production within the framework of an agricultural and forestry operation.
It cannot be hunted until after 42 days
Game that has escaped in this way can only be hunted after a period of 42 days under the applicable legal system. According to the injured party, the deer had only been in the wild for a maximum of 14 days.
The shooting of the animal raises the suspicion that the hunter is guilty of animal abuse. The 41-year-old is therefore reported to the prosecutor’s office in Graz. He justified himself by saying that he didn’t know the game had escaped from a game port.
investigations are underway
He assumed it was a free-roaming fallow deer. It should be noted that, according to the unanimous opinion of experts, there are no wild fallow deer in the area in question. The facts will now have to be legally clarified by the judiciary.
