Shortly before the second round of the presidential election in the Czech Republic, poll favorite Petr Pavel was declared dead in fake emails. The police also intervened on Thursday. Former NATO general Pavel himself wrote on Twitter: “Yes, I’m alive.” and spoke of a “new low” in a campaign against him.
According to a report from the news portal “Seznamzpravy.cz”, the sender is said to be from Russia.
The other party has reported death threats
Pavel’s opponent, the populist ex-premier Andrei Babis, condemned the move as “disgusting”. The billionaire himself had reported anonymous death threats a few days ago.
During the election campaign, which focused mainly on the war in Ukraine, Babis tried to portray Pavel as a warmonger. His opponent defended aid to the country attacked by Russia.
Pavel leads in polls
About 8.3 million voters are called to determine the successor to President Milos Zeman this Friday and Saturday. According to a survey by opinion research agency Median, Pavel is clearly ahead with about 58 percent. About 42 percent of those polled spoke out for Babis.
