Intense burning smell throughout the building, enormous fire damage, a lot of water from the roof to the basement. The damage from the major fire cannot yet be quantified. And yet one thing is clear: the commercial academy (HAK 1) in Salzburg-Lehen needs millions in restructuring.
Firefighters fought the flames for nearly 16 hours. The “fire out” could be reported on Tuesday at 4:03 a.m. The day before, the alarm was raised at 11:57 AM. Nearly 200 men from the professional fire brigade and the voluntary fire brigade took action. “Even at night it was still burning fiercely,” says Operations Manager Werner Kloiber.
There was even more cleanup and security work on Tuesday. The school itself is now officially closed. Teachers were allowed to collect documents in advance. Members of the Hohensalzburg Music Band dragged out their sheet music, instruments and uniforms. They have their rehearsal room in the basement of the HAK.
Police fire investigators took a photo on the spot on Tuesday. Furthermore, everything indicates that building material started to burn on the roof during the fire-in activities. To rule out all other causes of the fire, the public prosecutor had an expert opinion drawn up.
It is also impossible for the students to return to their classes after the holidays – the damage to the building is too great. An alternative residence must be found for 500 young people. The owner of the school is the Federal Real Estate Agency (BIG). The students will probably have to move to containers. Their location is still open. One problem: the sports field of the HAK has been designated as grassland. The Education Directorate and BIG want to make a decision on Friday.
