The wife and daughter of imprisoned ex-EU MP Pier Antonio Panzeri have been released from house arrest. They will not be extradited to Brussels, their lawyer Angelo De Riso reports. The reason is the cooperation of Panzeri with the Belgian judiciary.
The former MEP signed an agreement that regulates his cooperation with the Belgian judiciary, a one-year prison sentence, a fine and the surrender of all assets he has acquired so far. The value is up to one million euros.
Want to charge more members
Panzeri would like to accuse other members of the European Parliament. The politician of the Italian left-wing party Articolo 1 had reached an agreement last week with the Belgian prosecutor’s office on the one-year prison sentence. His wife and daughter have been under house arrest in Brescia since December 9. This was lifted on Thursday.
Politicians from Qatar and Morocco are said to have tried to bribe MEPs in order to influence certain matters. Panzeri and other suspects, such as former European Parliament Vice-President Eva Kaili, are charged with money laundering, corruption and involvement in criminal activities.
His NGO is also under investigation
Panzeri sat for the Social Democrats in the European Parliament from 2004 to 2019. Most recently, he led the non-governmental organization Fight Impunity, which is also a focus of the Belgian judiciary. The EU corruption scandal broke more than a month ago.
