With Germany’s announcement that it would supply Leopard 2A6 main battle tanks to Ukraine and allow allies such as Poland to supply tanks, the war in Ukraine entered a new phase. Kiev will soon be able to deploy modern Western weapon systems in defensive battles against Putin’s invading forces. The Leopard 2 is the spearhead, but other NATO countries also supply heavy equipment. We show here all the details of the technology and firepower in graphical form.
Ukraine received 14 Leopard 2A6 from Germany – it is a modernized version of the German export hit, which has been produced since 1979 and is used in more than a dozen partner countries. Leopard tanks of the 1980s model 2A4 can be expected from other NATO countries: Poland and Finland have indicated readiness for delivery, as have the Netherlands, Norway and Spain. In total, about 100 units are expected to find their way to Ukraine.
But also 31 American M1A1 Abrams, 14 British Challenger 2 and an unknown number of heavily armed French wheeled tanks of the type AMX-10 RC are also made available to the Ukrainian army for their defensive battle. We take a closer look at the technology and the strengths and weaknesses of each combat vehicle.
