A tragic accident took place late Friday evening in Weitensfeld. A 19-year-old driver lost control and crashed into the Gurk. Any help came too late for the young man.
The 19-year-old was driving towards Feldkirchen at about 9:45 p.m. on Friday when, for unknown reasons, he skidded on a long left-hand curve in Kaindorf and came out of Gurktal Straße. “The car fell down a steep embankment, crashed into a tree and finally came to rest in the neighboring Gurk who was lying on its roof,” said a police officer.
The water level of the river was too high
Two subsequent road users noticed a torn street marking and stopped. Lying in the river, they suddenly saw the crashed car and immediately called the rescue services. “However, the people could not try to save themselves because of the Gurk’s high water level of about 140 centimeters,” an official explained.
Moments later, firefighters managed to free the St. Veiter from his car. However, attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful. The 19-year-old died at the scene of the accident.
Gurktal Strasse was closed to all traffic until 12:30 p.m. The FF Weitensfeld, Altenmarkt, Gurk and Strasbourg were deployed with about 60 men.
