Despite the currently difficult situation at the front, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has shown confidence in victory against the Russian attackers. “2023 must and will certainly be the year of our victory,” Zelenskyy wrote on Sunday.
In his video address every evening, he also admitted in view of his country’s hard-fought east: “The situation is very tough.”
Cities under Russian attack
In the Donetsk region, the cities of Bakhmut and Wuhledar, in particular, are still exposed to continuous Russian shelling. Despite heavy casualties in their own ranks, the Russians did not lessen the intensity of their attacks there.
“Russia hopes to prolong the war and exhaust our troops,” Zelensky said. “So we must make time our weapon. We need to speed up events.”
The Ukrainian president is pushing for further arms shipments from the West
In particular, the speed of delivery of foreign military aid is a key factor in this war, the Ukrainian leader stressed. He also urged further arms deliveries beyond the main battle tanks recently pledged by the West.
