As people become more and more aggressive in everyday life, Vienna Airport is now addressing passengers with posters. However, the union calls for concrete measures and stronger worker protection.
Anyone currently flying from Vienna-Schwechat Airport cannot ignore it. In the terminals in the check-in area, in the arrivals hall, but also at the security check: travelers are reminded to treat airport staff humanely and with respect. The reason for this is a sad global negative trend. Violence at work is on the rise. Particularly affected: workers in service professions and in the transport sector.
Travel intensive times are the most critical
Reason enough for the airport to start its own awareness campaign now. Basically, the contact between travelers and staff in the daily passenger operation is good, according to the “Krone”. Nevertheless, disrespectful behavior occurs, especially in the travel-intensive times with 70,000 passengers per day. Usually it remains with verbal expressions of displeasure.
In individual cases, however, employees were also treated racially or hammered on the window of the counter. Julian Jäger, head of Vienna Airport: “Our employees always try to find solutions and provide support – but that does not justify a lack of respect for our staff!”
Violence also brings unions onto the scene
The employees are prepared with training courses on conflict management and dealing with difficult situations, but also with their own support offer. The trade union vida also calls for increased violence. This calls for stronger worker protection. Especially since the pandemic, more and more employees are confronted with angry citizens at work.
Pressure and stress continue to increase. The “Tatort workplace” initiative aims to help those affected and is intensively involved in the problem of violence.
