Missing monkeys from US zoo found in abandoned house

Date:

Breathe a sigh of relief at the zoo in the American city of Dallas: two emperor monkeys that disappeared from there have been found alive. Emergency services, with the help of local police, found both monkeys in an abandoned home in Lancaster near Dallas, Texas, Dallas police tweeted Tuesday night (local time). But the incident remains a mystery.

The animals were found in a box and sitting on a wire frame, police said, publishing an accompanying photo. According to police, detectives received a tip from an unnamed party to look into the Lancaster residence.

man is sought
The zoo tweeted “overjoyed” that the residents had been found. The police have informed the zoo to return them safely from where they were found. Shortly before, police had used surveillance camera footage to ask the public for help in identifying a man who may have information about the whereabouts of the monkeys. No arrests have been made so far.

The marmosets disappeared from the Texas city zoo on Monday. According to the zoo, their enclosure was apparently “deliberately” damaged. Initial investigation indicated theft.

More puzzling incidents
Her disappearance joins other puzzling incidents that have yet to be solved: In mid-January, a clouded leopard broke out of its enclosure, as reported by the Dallas Morning News newspaper. After an intensive search, the big cat appeared unharmed on the zoo grounds. Suspicious damage was also discovered in their enclosure. About a week later, according to the newspaper, a vulture was found dead in his enclosure. According to the zoo, an autopsy indicated that the bird died “not of natural causes.”

The zoo has now said it has installed additional cameras and instituted more nighttime security patrols.
