“Killed her” – police dogs dead in car – owner acquitted

Date:

“That makes no sense anymore. They are dead,” the policeman called to his girlfriend, in whose car four dogs died. The woman desperately tried to save the animals by pouring cold water over their heads. Now the service dog handler in training is before the court for animal abuse in Korneuburg (Lower Austria).

In particular, the police point out every summer that animals – especially dogs – should not be left in the car in high temperatures. And that is exactly what an aspiring service dog handler of the Lower Austrian State Police is accused of. At 30 degrees around noon, the four-legged friends – three Malinois and a German Shepherd – died a tragic heat death.

fainting after jogging
The 34-year-old does not remember exactly how that happened. He packed his things around noon on August 16, 2022 to go jogging with the four dogs – nothing special according to the Upper Austrian. Completely exhausted, he came back to the car with his four-legged friends from the run. He loaded the animals into the trunk and onto the backseat.

After that, he knows only a little: his circulation failed, he said that he lost consciousness. The four police dogs: trapped in the hot vehicle. “We don’t know how long. The fact is that the dogs were dead at the end of the day,” said the public prosecutor in the court of Korneuburg.

The girlfriend’s animals also died
The 34-year-old also had to make this terrible discovery when he regained consciousness. “Then I screamed and collapsed again,” the police officer said in front of the judge. “I killed the dogs. I kept yelling at my partner.” Two of the four-legged friends belonged to his girlfriend, two were police dogs.

“The dogs were his everything,” claimed the Upper Austrian defender. He would never have left her in the car in such heat on purpose. However, a veterinarian friend does not believe the defendant’s version: “That makes no sense to me. No dog dies from jogging for 30 minutes at 30 degrees.” According to the police officer, the animals were already very weak from running.

Service dog handler was his dream job
The fact that the man suffers from weakness and circulatory problems has long been known to doctors. He didn’t tell his employer, “That wasn’t very smart,” the judge rebuked him. The policeman would have been concerned about his work. “It was always my dream to become a service dog handler,” he explains.

Although the judge finds his version understandable and acquits him, the animal lover’s dream shattered. He now works for the Upper Austrian police and had to interrupt his training as a service dog handler.
