Trucks get stuck – snowfall causes chaos in Styrian traffic

Date:

Heavy snowfall began on Thursday night, especially in Upper Styria. This causes disruptions in road traffic that can last all day.

During the night, the snow spread from the northwest to the northeast. Trucks have been stuck on the Ennstal federal road (B 320) in the Schladming area for several hours. A loss of time of approximately 15 minutes was therefore expected in both directions in early morning traffic.

Truck chains required at the switch
But there were also delays on the motorways in the early hours of the morning: on the A2, the clean-up trucks had a lot of work to do on the changing routes. Traffic congestion only started to clear around 8 a.m. and chains are currently mandatory for trucks over 3.5 tonnes in both directions in the area from Pinggau to Grimmenstein.

The snowfall on the A9 reached the Gleinalm tunnel in time for morning traffic, trapping lorries in front of the tunnel entrance. There is no sign of a quick improvement in the situation as the snowfall is expected to continue throughout the day.

Increased avalanche danger
Chains are currently compulsory for all cars in Straßegg, on the Teichalm and on the Rechberg. The Gaberl and the Alpl are currently closed to trucks over 7.5 tons.

In combination with the amount of fresh snow, the increasing wind also increases the risk of avalanches: warning level 4 currently applies.
