Mission in Mittersill – German (62) suffered a torn aorta while walking

Date:

Mountain rescuers and observant hikers saved the life of a 62-year-old hiker in Salzburg on Tuesday afternoon. He underwent hours of surgery in Salzburg that same day.

The man was traveling in the Habachtal in Mittersill (Pinzgau) when he passed out. “A young family passing by made an emergency call at 2 p.m.,” said Gerfried Walser, head of Mittersill’s mountain rescue service.

Ten mountain rescuers stormed into the deep wintry Habachtal. The man was still reacting and showed no outward signs. There was a suspicion of an internal emergency.

The helicopter was initially unable to land, but eventually brought the man from the Habachtal to the hospital in Salzburg. It turned out that the German had suffered a ruptured aorta. After a ten-hour operation, his health was assessed as stable.
