The Chinese special administrative region of Hong Kong wants to win back tourists with a charm offensive after the end of the strict corona measures. Prime Minister John Lee announced on Thursday that 500,000 free airline tickets will be distributed to visitors from all over the world from March.
The tickets would be available through local airlines. Additional free flights are reserved for Hong Kongers and visitors from mainland China, it said.
Back in the spotlight
With the large-scale campaign, Hong Kong wants to be back in the spotlight. According to a report from the Hong Kong newspaper “South China Morning Post”, the cost would be the equivalent of US$255 million (€234.07 million).
The mask requirement still applies
Even before mainland China, the financial metropolis had lifted many of its strict entry rules in the fall. Previously, travelers had to endure a hotel quarantine, which caused the number of visitors to collapse. Hong Kong’s economy contracted by 3.5 percent last year. Normality has not yet fully returned. Masks are still mandatory in Hong Kong, not only in public buildings, but also on the streets.
