When their fishing boat capsized in rough seas off Western Australia, three men managed to survive using an unusual life preserver: they clung to a cooler for several hours before they could be rescued.
The shipwreck occurred on Wednesday off Eclipse Island. In the stormy sea, three fishing boats had engine problems after a night fishing trip, local media reported. Water would have entered the vehicle before it capsized in the stormy sea.
EPIRB distress signal sent
Fortunately, all three men were wearing life jackets – and were able to use the cool box as a swimming aid. They managed to send out a signal with the emergency radio beacon EPIRB. “In this case, both could have made the difference between life and death,” said Albany Sea Rescue Coordinator Chris John.
The three men were rescued without serious injuries. A man in his 40s was taken to Albany Hospital as a precaution.
