The desire to go on holiday is back, but a third of Austrians are not planning a trip. 50 percent are considering a summer holiday, 37 percent a year ago, 36 percent two years ago. Another 18 percent are undecided. Nearly a third of those who want to leave have already booked.
“Money plays the main role in holiday planning this year. While in the past two years about a third of Austrians who did not want to travel in the summer cited financial reasons as the deciding factor in their decision, the proportion is now 53 percent,” Gallup said in a broadcast on Thursday.
The share of those summer vacationers who have less money available for vacation than before the Corona crisis has risen from 25 to 33 percent since 2021, according to the online survey by the Gallup Institute (sample of 1,000 people, own research).
Half of the holidaymakers want to go away for a week
Just like in 2020, 50 percent of summer holidaymakers want to go away for a week, 25 percent for two weeks and 14 percent want to go on holiday for more than two weeks. 11 percent take a short vacation, according to Gallup. More than half of the holiday planners wanted to go abroad in the summer. Two years ago, the share of holidaymakers abroad was 28 percent. 88 percent of them planned to spend their main vacation in Europe or nearby countries and 12 percent abroad.
Holiday activities related to expenses would have lost importance. For 38 percent of the respondents who at least occasionally go on summer holidays, going out and going out have become less important. 36 percent showed less interest in shopping on vacation, 23 percent in visiting restaurants.
