More than two decades after the September 11 attacks, 34 prisoners are still held at the US Guantanamo detention camp in Cuba. The US Department of Defense announced this on Thursday after a detainee was transferred from Pakistan to the Central American country of Belize.
The U.S. government continues to work with other countries to responsibly reduce the number of detainees and eventually close the camp, it said.
Sometimes almost 800 prisoners
The camp is located in Cuba at the US Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay. At times nearly 800 people were imprisoned.
The camp was set up under Republican President George W. Bush after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States to detain suspected Islamist terrorists without trial. Human rights organizations have long called for its closure.
