Many unanswered questions – car with corpse in the inn: the Sigi case remains a mystery

Date:

Since Wednesday there is sad certainty for the family and friends of Sigi O.. More than a year and a half after the disappearance of the Tyrolean, his body was discovered – in his car, which should have been in the inn for just as long. The autopsy of the dead at Innsbruck’s forensic medicine confirmed the identity – but many questions are still open.

How did this terrible accident happen? Has the Audi TT and the body of the 79-year-old Tyrolean actually been in the inn since October 2021? What was the cause of death? How is it possible that no one has seen the vehicle and the missing person for more than a year and a half or that it cannot be found despite countless searches?

What was previously known
Questions to which investigators of the Tyrolean police are now looking for answers. The Tyrolean’s life was completely unremarkable until his disappearance on October 23, 2021. On that day, the 79-year-old suddenly disappeared after leaving an event at Gasthof Grattenbrücke in Kirchbichl around 5 p.m. Since then there has been no trace of Sigi O. and his striking, light blue Audi. Earlier on this day, a hardware store in Wörgl and the Volkshaus had been converted into further stations.

Even after several house searches and another call to the police a year after the Tyrolean’s disappearance, the case remained unsolved. See you Tuesday evening!

“All four wheels looked up”
Michael Freisinger and his colleague Manfred Kogler discovered a car in the raging inn near Kirchbichl shortly before 6:45 p.m. “All four wheels looked up,” said the “Krone” eyewitnesses. The two immediately raised the alarm. Local residents alerted the emergency services to a striking wave. “The car was also discovered by a helicopter,” explains Martin Embacher, commander of the Kirchbichl fire brigade.

However, due to the high water level and the strong current, rescue was not possible at first. “Our divers finally managed to attach a rope to the vehicle.” The light blue Audi was pulled out of the water around 8:30 p.m.

Autopsy brought certainty
A male body was found in the car. The autopsy on Wednesday at Innsbruck’s forensic medicine finally brought sad certainty. The remains were those of Sigi O.

“There is currently no evidence of third-party debt,” police said. And further: “The exact cause of death will not be known until the autopsy report is available. However, based on the condition of the corpse, it can be assumed that the death occurred a long time ago and may correspond to the date of disposal.”
