Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khameneiannounced this Sunday the amnesty and the sentence reduction of “a significant number” of protesters convicted during the protests that have shaken the country in recent months, on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the return of Ayatollah Khomeini from exile and the triumph of the 1979 Islamic revolution.

The amnesty applies to those who have not spied for foreign powers or had contacts with intelligence agencies of other countries; killed or injured persons or participated in the destruction of public or military property, Mizan, a news agency for the judiciary, reported.

However, the authorities have not reported how many of the nearly 20,000 detainees protests will – according to foreign NGOs – benefit from this measure.

Iran has experienced protests since the death in police custody in September Mahsa Amini after he was arrested for not wearing the Islamic headscarf properly.

The authorities have responded to the uprising led by youths calling for the end of the Islamic Republic with vigorous repression that has left nearly 500 dead and 20,000 arrested, hundreds of whom have been sentenced to prison and 17 to gallows.

Four demonstrators have been executed so far, one of them in public, causing the protests to lose momentum significantly.

It is customary to pardon prisoners on the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which is commemorated on February 11, and amnesty has been declared for “tens of thousands” of prisoners in addition to those convicted of the protests.

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisí has confirmed that this year’s celebrations of the 44th anniversary of the overthrow of the last Shah will be aimed at “helping the people follow the right path”.
