He is said to have medically treated mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro (see video above), who had been on the run for 30 years – now a well-known general practitioner has been arrested by Carabinieri in Sicily. For two years he allegedly helped Denaro with treatments for an intestinal tumor, despite knowing exactly the true identity of the Cosa Nostra’s godfather, who was arrested three weeks ago.
According to the media, the doctor would have prescribed dozens of medical tests for Messina Denaro under a false name. Messina Denaro was treated under the name of a school friend in a private clinic in Palermo. He was also arrested in recent days for aiding Messina Denaro’s escape.
Investigators complained that, with the complicity of part of the Sicilian community of Campobella di Mazara, where Denaro last resided, the boss was able to undergo undisturbed medical treatment and even surgery.

Denaro is considered the last big boss of Cosa Nostra, but also a link to the Calabrian ‘Ndrangheta in the cocaine trade. Investigators hope he will become a star witness to avoid the harsh prison conditions for prominent mobsters. The mafia boss is seriously ill and is due to undergo chemotherapy in the high-security prison in the Abruzzo town of L’Aquila, where he is currently being held.
