Tanxugueiras and “a concert to connect with the country”

Date:

The Galician pandeireteiras perform in Murcia this Friday, during the first day of the Folkfest

Aida Tarrío, one third of Tanxugueiras, picks up the phone just a few days after her performance at Benidorm Fest 2023. After nearly representing Spain in 2022 and gathering a legion of fans, this time the trio formed by Tarrío, Sabela Maneiro and Olaia Maneiro appeared as a guest group. “This year we experience the performance much more calmly. I think it’s just as intense because singing ‘Terra’ again at Benidorm Fest for the fans who supported her so much at the time and supported her, that’s something very intense and it stays that way every time we sing it. Something very special,” explains the Galician pandeireteira.

Regarding the victory of Blanca Paloma, who was her partner in the previous edition, «we are very happy that she is going. She is an artist like the top of a fir tree and she deserves it. In other interviews I said my favorite was Alice Wonder, but what Blanca did recently was incredible. She is a real winner and she will leave us in a very good position again this year.”

With his participation in Benidorm Fest, Tanxugueiras marked a new path with his own style that starts from traditional Galician music and merges with urban rhythms. An example that other authors have followed. “We know that we are not the discoverers of anything nor the first to merge. There are many contemporary artists working with their culture and language and we have many references who have been doing so for years. It may be that we took the first step last year because we were lucky enough to be chosen [en Benidorm Fest] and the courage we had to go into this, but I think it’s necessary for people to follow that path now. We are delighted that this year another language other than Spanish was heard, references to Castilla-La Mancha, to flamenco…”, says the singer, who believes that every day “more people attach importance to roots and cultural identification”.

Tanxugueiras will perform this Friday at the Víctor Villegas Auditorium in Murcia, within the Folkfest festival, the third edition of this event dedicated to traditional music that will be held throughout the weekend and will feature performances by regional and national groups such as Juan José Robles, Azarbe, Sword Master and New Minstrel Master.

On Friday, Azarbe, who performs at 8:30 p.m., opens the evening to make way for the Galician formation. It will be “a very powerful live performance” where “people will have a good time and soak up the traditional Galician culture, music, dance and our language.” A good time “with music with a strong, feminist message, full of roots, something we do out of love, the utmost respect for all our legacy. It is a concert to make contact with the earth,” says the artist.

Last summer the trio released ‘Diluvio’, their third album, which includes songs like the well-known ‘Terra’ and other singles like ‘Midas’, ‘Averno’ – a collaboration with Rayden – ‘Figa’ or ‘Pano corado’ . An album that started to take shape in 2020 and that is conceived as a conceptual work where they question beliefs or assumed guilt in society in order to convert them into “authentic vital learning” and where they revise the seven deadly sins and add more add three: patriarchy, hostility, homogeneity. From the process “we learned a lot. Since we started in 2020, we had time to sit down with each topic, give it the space it deserved, and learn from every sin we talked about.

But “a super-intense year” arrived that changed everything: “A lot happened and everything we thought we had learned collided with reality. We realized that we are always learning and that’s the best thing the album has to offer us. has to offer”.

A world of fame, of egos “that you have to learn to manage” and from which Tanxugueiras use their loudspeaker to send a committed and feminist message and to fight against the impositions of society. “The more women on stage sending a powerful message, the better. That’s what we’re aiming for, that there’s a lot more to come. There is no rivalry between women,” says Tarrío. “We are also aware that many girls, boys and young people follow us and we want to contribute our small grain of sand to an inclusive world where we can live in freedom without harming anyone “, he concludes.
