Miracle in Syria – Earthquake: Baby is born under rubble

Date:

These cases are like a miracle: after the devastating earthquake on the Turkish-Syrian border on Monday, a baby was born under the rubble in the Syrian town of Janairis. And in southeastern Turkey, rescuers were able to rescue a woman (58) alive from the rubble of a hotel 52 hours after the disaster.

It’s a terrible start to life and a miracle at the same time: a newborn girl was rescued from under the rubble of a house in the Syrian earthquake zone. The baby was still attached to its mother, who died in the disaster. The newborn’s father, his three sisters, his brother and his aunt could only be found dead, the NTV news channel reports.

Savior cut the umbilical cord
The family home had collapsed on Monday as a result of the violent earthquake. Relatives then searched for the buried family. “Then we heard a noise and we started digging,” one of them, Khalil Sawadi, told AFP. “We cleared the rubble and found this little one, praise be to God.”

“We cut the umbilical cord and my cousin took the baby to the hospital,” Sawadi describes the amazing rescue. A video circulated online of a man holding a naked, cloth-covered baby with the remains of his umbilical cord still hanging from his stomach in the rubble. In freezing temperatures, someone brings a blanket to wrap the newborn.

girl in stable condition
The little one was immediately taken to the hospital, where she was placed in an incubator and given IVs of vitamins, according to NTV. The baby suffered bruises, but the condition of the 3175 gram newborn is stable, the doctor says.

The province of Kahramanmaras in Turkey was also severely affected by the earthquake, because that is where the epicenter was. Some of the injured are flown from there to Istanbul for treatment. Atatürk Airport, which is closed to civil air traffic, will be used for this purpose. There was also a stroke of luck when a hotel collapsed: rescuers were able to rescue a woman alive from the rubble 52 hours after the strong earthquake.

Emergency workers continue to struggle with freezing temperatures
Temperatures around freezing make life even more difficult for survivors in the disaster area, many of them without a roof over their heads. The helpers continue to struggle with freezing temperatures. However, the weather cleared up – according to the weather service, no further snowfall or rain is expected in the affected areas for the time being.

More than 8,000 dead already
According to new official information, the number of confirmed fatalities has risen to 8164. More than 39,200 people were injured. At least 5,894 people have been killed and more than 34,810 injured in Turkey alone, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay announced late Tuesday evening. In addition, at least 5,775 buildings collapsed on Monday as a result of the strong earthquake.
