The handling of fireworks caused a major fire in Galtbrunn in the municipality of St. Georgen am Ybbsfelde in Lower Austria’s Mostviertel on Friday evening, leaving two youths, some of whom were seriously injured. A 16- and a 17-year-old boy had detonated rockets upstairs.
A loud explosion in St. Georgen am Ybssfelde caused fear and terror on Friday evening. The entire top floor of a single-family home was on fire. Neighbors immediately alerted the emergency services. “Many of the callers spoke of a loud bang,” explains Notruf NÖ’s Philipp Gulederer when asked about the alarm scenario by “Krone”. Two young people aged 16 and 17 are said to have handled fireworks in the attic room and ignited a rocket. Within a very short time, the fire had spread to the entire roof structure.
Difficult transportation due to snow storms
Both boys had smoke inhalation, one of the two was taken to the hospital in Amstetten with serious burns. Under difficult circumstances: “Due to the bad weather conditions, it was not possible to deploy a helicopter, so the youngster had to be taken to hospital by ambulance,” says Gutlederer.
Due to the severity of the burns, the boy was transported to the Graz State Hospital that same night. A total of eight fire brigades were busy for several hours. The after-fire work continued into the morning hours. The youths risk being sued for negligence.
The police are asking for caution
The police expects a significant increase in these types of accidents in the near future. “Illegal New Year’s fireworks from the Czech Republic are particularly dangerous,” it says. The executive makes an urgent appeal not to shoot with “self-laboratory equipment”. In the worst case, it can cost lives.
