Is Beijing hiding a deadly wave of Covid? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), corona numbers had risen quickly even before the strict corona restrictions were recently eased. China’s “explosion” of cases and “increased transmission intensity” began “long before the zero-Covid policy was relaxed,” said emergency department chief Michael Ryan. Journalists on the spot got a picture of the true dimensions of the corona wave in Beijing. They report appalling conditions and an extremely high number of unreported corona deaths.
For example, reporters from Britain’s Financial Times had looked around the Covid hospitals and crematoriums in the Chinese capital and found significant excess mortality. An anonymous employee of the state crematorium is quoted by the reporters as saying, “We cremated 150 bodies on Wednesday. A multiple of what was usual last winter. We cremate them on the same day they are admitted.” About 30 to 40 of the dead would have had Corona (see video below).
The Dutch daily newspaper de Volkskrant also reports similar circumstances and quotes a funeral director: “Due to Covid, demand is much higher this week. We already run out of space.”

China does not cooperate sufficiently with the health authorities
It is currently difficult to estimate exactly how high the number of unreported corona deaths is. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus hinted that Beijing is not cooperating enough with the UN health agency to get to the bottom of what is causing the pandemic. “We continue to urge China to provide requested data and conduct investigations so that we can better understand the origins of the virus,” he said on Wednesday.
Hospitals are already overcrowded
The corona situation is difficult to estimate because there are no reliable figures. Hospitals are reporting a rush as authorities urge people to recover from Covid-19 at home if possible. Many businesses, shops and restaurants in Beijing are closed because workers are sick en masse.
The Chinese health authorities recently gave the green light for a second booster for, for example, the over-60s or high-risk groups with chronic diseases. According to official figures, only 69 percent of Chinese people over 60 and only 42 percent of people over 80 have received three vaccinations so far. For fear of side effects, the elderly in China are insufficiently vaccinated.
