Zelensky lands in Brussels

Date:

The Ukrainian leader will speak at the European Parliament and hold meetings with European leaders asking for increased military support for Ukraine

With expectation and a great security operation. For example, this Thursday Brussels received the visit of Ukrainian President Volodímir Zelensky, a historic trip – the first to the EU since the start of the war – but which has been somewhat softened by the leader’s earlier visits to the United Kingdom and France. The president will speak in the extraordinary plenary session of the European Parliament and after that he is expected to participate in the summit of European Union leaders. There, according to European sources, he will hold meetings with them “in batches and in very small groups.”

However, his schedule is kept strictly secret for security reasons. He landed in the Belgian capital together with French President Emmanuel Macron and was received on the same runway by community leaders Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen. In the month in which a year has passed since the invasion of Ukraine and the Russian army prepares a major offensive in Donbas, the bloc wants to strengthen its support for Kiev, which they will continue to help “as long as it is necessary”. The EU has been by far Ukraine’s biggest international ally, sending humanitarian, economic and military aid; and economic sanctions against Russia. Recently, a coalition of countries has pledged to send Leopard 2 tanks to the country.

Zelensky, however, continues to press for more weapons. In London, the leader asked for fighters to take on Russian forces, a request added to that of the long-range missiles he called for at the EU-Ukraine summit in Kiev and which he deems “decisive” for all the territory.

Ukraine’s European perspective promises to be one of the debates of the day again. Despite von der Leyen recently highlighting the country’s “tremendous progress” in “decisive reforms”, Brussels insists that the EU accession process “has no shortcuts” and that time must be respected. A first report from the European Commission is expected in the spring and a more formal evaluation in the autumn.
