A good legacy is not that easy. Time and again it happens that inheritance disputes end up in court despite notarial deeds of gift or existing wills. In Carinthia, children were now complaining, annoyed that their mother had given their cousins a nice weekend house instead of them. Who has the better cards?
It happens in many families that parents, grandparents, aunts or uncles donate an apartment or a house to close relatives during their lifetime – be it children, grandchildren, nephews or nieces. Gift agreements are regularly used for this purpose, usually drawn up by notaries or lawyers. After a sworn signature of the notary or lawyer, registration in the land register follows. It is then no longer the aunt but the niece who appears as the owner in the land register. But trouble begins when the aunt dies – and the battle for the inheritance begins.
