According to a report, the United States will support Ukraine in coordinating strikes against the Russian military. In most attacks using the US’ advanced missile systems, the US or allies would provide or confirm the coordinates of attack targets, the Washington Post said Thursday, citing unnamed Ukrainian and US sources.
The information would be provided by the US military in Europe. The newspaper named Russian ammunition depots or barracks on Ukrainian territory as targets.
Ukraine gets accurate target information from US
A senior US representative confirmed the “key role of the US,” it said. Target search assistance is therefore used to ensure accuracy and achieve maximum effectiveness with limited ammunition supplies. The US provided coordinates and precise information about the target in an advisory capacity only, the newspaper quoted the US representative as saying. They would not allow attacks during the process.
“Ukrainians are responsible for finding targets, setting priorities and ultimately deciding which ones to attack. The U.S. does not approve targets, nor are we involved in the selection or deployment of targets,” the Washington Post quoted a Pentagon response to the investigation as saying. Over time, the way information was exchanged was optimized to meet the requests and to support Ukraine’s “target processes” more quickly and on a larger scale.
The US is a key ally of Ukraine
The United States is considered Ukraine’s main ally. They sent several large packages of weapons and ammunition in rapid succession. The Americans have provided or promised Kiev several heavy weapon systems, including the Himar-type multiple rocket launchers. In late January, after much back-and-forth and in parallel with the German commitment to supply Leopard tanks to Kiev, the US government also announced that it would deliver 31 M1 Abrams main battle tanks to Ukraine.
