The insect traveled as a stowaway between camera equipment from the Australian city of Melbourne and was first discovered at the Design Center in Linz. You can find the whole story and many photos here.
“She’s probably a tennis fan,” joked Hans Adrowitzer, press officer at Oberösterreich Ladies Linz, when he described to “Krone” how an uninvited exotic guest caused some moments of shock.
What happened?
A giant crab spider hid among technical devices flown from Melbourne to Linz for the television broadcast of the sporting spectacle. The insect took shelter in a decorative strip, where a transmission technician taped it off until the official veterinarian and fire brigade went to the design center to capture the animal.
The largest spiders in the world
With a wingspan of up to 35 centimeters, the Huntsman is one of the largest spiders in the world. Although not deadly, the poison should not be underestimated. It often scares off tourists in Australia with its appearance, but it is considered relatively peaceful and is even tolerated in some households to keep smaller insects at bay.
“Krone” visit to the animal shelter in Linz
The Linz example is probably still a baby. When “Krone” visited the animal shelter in Linz, he was only five centimeters tall.
Employee Nora Sudra takes care of the eight-legged friend until a suitable home is found: “I was also a bit scared when I had to move the spider to the terrarium, but now we get along well.”
